Hi there,

While browsing around tribe.net, I was very surprised to find a discussion group on electric violin players. I had no idea there were so many of us around!

I play violin and viola, viola being my main instrument. I played in a band for 5 years called Gropius, we consisited of violin, viola, bass guitar, drums and female vox. I absolutley loved this band, and i miss it terribly. We toured regionally (I live in TX) and actually got to play in L.A. a couple of times at the Roxy. A musical high point in this musicians life!

Our influences were Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, the Cure and many other gothic staples.

I dont know if there are any websites still exsisting about us, with our music and the like....if I can find one I will submit it to the group. I would love to hear what fellow violinists think of the sound.

Looking forward to some interesting discussions!!

    Welcome to the tribe....
don't get your hopes too high about interesting conversations.
In this tribe like in the most on the tribe.net - not much talking is going on.

NO! You have to move to SF. . .ha, ha, ha.

So, you still playing or what? Sounds like you're on sebatical by your listing. Did you do original music in Gropius or covers?

I'm extremely moved by improv music and mysticism. Like to transcend the trivial whenever I can musically. You?

I am still playing, just not as much anymore. Mostly at home or with a few friends, but nothing like the schedule I used to keep!
We did original music for the most part, but threw some covers in for good measure, Bauhaus' She's in Parties, The Cure's Like Cockatoos, and we even did Patsy Cline's Walkin After Midnight, among some others.

I definitely enjoy improv music, I think getting an energy going between musicians and just letting the music take you to different places is an unbelievable experience. Although I do believe this happens with more structrual music as well. Even though a piece is written down and a group performs it as so, the same energy can take over and make the music an extraordinary experience, not only for the audience, but for the group itself.

Anyhoo, I could go on, but work calls!

Tell me more about what moves and influences you....

What influences me are the actions that reveal the truth of those around me. Thus, creating the vibrations of the music that exudes; which also means that one is very aware of one's surroundings. . .

Music is my life-blood and honoring both that and the search for the highest good in Self and All are highly influential in my everyday and musical life.

Can I be put into a genre box? NO. Too small for my liking. I have an openness for what flows in the moment and the music that is derived from that practice. So, whether it's styles such SOD or BJORK or Billie Holiday my being vibes with it.

I live for making music and getting out of the way for God to come through it.

        YOU?!

My playing history is similar to yours I think. I never played professionally... mostly in private settings with friends in basements or living rooms. I love exploring the sonic territory between improvisation (like jazz) and ritual gesture (like goth). Joy Division got the ball rolling this way twenty years ago I think.

My sense of taste drifted away from composed music after the pre-arranged element started to feel too contrived. It just got in the way. Subordinating all of the instrumentalists to the whims of a dead guy from centuries ago just felt too limiting. Jazz meant total freedom, and goth/cyberpunk meant passionate intensity to me.

The artistic focus of sound shifted. Today timbre is everything, harmonic structure / pitch is passe.
