I use a Roland AC-90. This Amp is awesome. It has built in chorus which is super sweet and a separate channel if you want to use a micophone to sing with built in delay. The mic channel with effects sounds better than many high end effect units I have used on 3 way JBL PA systems ( I am a singer first, keyboardist /pianoist 2nd, and violinist third). This amp also can be mounted on a pole/short PA stand which I like better than sitting on the floor. I don't think you can get a better clean tone for electric violin than this one. I also use multi - effects through it including distortion, and it sounds fantastic. This amp is sized for practices or coffee house gigs. It has line outs so it can go to a PA and be used as a monitor as well.

I'm currently using a Fishman Loudbox Performer Amp and it's quite good for clear acoustic sound and distortion. Although I think I'm going to upgrade to the Fishman Pro because I have to have mine turned wayyyyy up in order to keep up with my band. :) It does get loud enough, but I just don't wanna push it too much.

First I would like to say hello. I am very happy to have found a place to share knowledge with other violin player.I am looking for a good amplifier for my electric violin. I would like something versatile that can produce a clean tone but can also handle distortion. Some suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I am all about my SWR Strawberry Blonde. That amp is made for acoustic instruments and has a really nice tone. If you can afford it the California Blone is really nice too. It's a little bigger and has more power.

I have several violins: one is a 4 string Zeta Modern Strados (full body) that I like for distortion and heavy processing. The other is a custom made acoustic 4 string violin with a L. R. Bagg Bridge Pick up and the other one is a 4 string Baritone violin curly Koa model (full body if you can call it that way) by T. F. Barrett with a Barbara polyphonic Transducer.

Thanks for the response...

Ok, Martin...
I would recommend either a choice of a Marshall "stack", or a good quality PA System...

It's not an orthodox choice....

But after trying many combinations - it's the best I happen to know so far!

You get true representation of the sound of your instrument with PA, very clear, and loud...with Marshall you'll get guts!
That is if you are playing other then Irish, Country, or Jazz music.

For those stated above - you can choose all the commercial brand names, for I believe they give more or less the same result.

However, every good amp best should be "rewired" for your personal needs, so as to get the most of your tone tone. Contact your local technician about that.

Hope that helps.
