What are you feeding your violin into?

This tribe needs some more action...

What are you doing to the signal that comes out of your violin? Straight to PA? Guitar effects? Through layers of software procesesing? I'm currently playing around with Ableton Live and pd. I'd love to learn some SuperCollider or ChucK to go really nuts...but first I probably should practice my playing.

ok, this past summer my violin was stolen out of my car, and even though a good friend was kind enough to purchase me a replacement, I still have a problem. He bought me an electric violin, which sounds great, except for the fact that the strings keep breaking.

Is there any particular type of strings that is better for electric violins? I am at my wits end, I have replaced the strings six times in four months.

Hey everyone! I was suprised to stumble onto this site yesterday, seems like electric violinists are a rare breed. I'm looking into getting one but I'd like some opinions on what you own, and what you recommend.

I'm trying to kick the classical habit and re-train myself to play/record for jazzy, funky house music and possibly some hip hop.

Best Wishes!

I need advice about a DI EQ device. I've read good things about the LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI, but also read that it's not a good DI, i.e. too hot for the board. (See http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/L_R__Baggs/Para_Acoustic_DI-01.html )

Am also considering the Sansamp Acoustic DI, now called the Para. Can anyone tell me how either of these perform through a PA? I have a Fishman piezo on my acoustic viola.

Thanks!

Also, how many play professionally and how many do not?

Hi there,

While browsing around tribe.net, I was very surprised to find a discussion group on electric violin players. I had no idea there were so many of us around!

I play violin and viola, viola being my main instrument. I played in a band for 5 years called Gropius, we consisited of violin, viola, bass guitar, drums and female vox. I absolutley loved this band, and i miss it terribly. We toured regionally (I live in TX) and actually got to play in L.A. a couple of times at the Roxy. A musical high point in this musicians life!

Our influences were Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, the Cure and many other gothic staples.

I dont know if there are any websites still exsisting about us, with our music and the like....if I can find one I will submit it to the group. I would love to hear what fellow violinists think of the sound.

Looking forward to some interesting discussions!!

Hello to all.

I have been playing violin since I was 9 years old. To say how long ago that was...well...just take mmy word it was a long time ago. I also play viola as well as teach both violin and voice.

I am currently in a Middle Eastern Band, Al-Samoud. It has been extremely fun as well as a challenge for me to not only learn the music but to also play the electric violin. I have always played acoustic with only a barcus barry for a pick-up. I still play my acoustic instrument for SCA events where I do alot of Irish, Scottish and Celtic music. But for the band I'm plugged in so I can compete soundwise with an electric Oud and a minimum of three drummers.

The instrument that I have is a Knilling, 5-string. It has the 4 strings of the violin with the added C on the bottom. From what I understand of this instrument there were only 7 of these made. It's a great instrument and the overall sound is wonderful. It does get to be a challenge because the strings are a fraction closer together than a normal violin. Sometimes I do end up on the wrong string, but the plus is that double-stops and chords are a lot easier on the instrument.

As far as myself, music is my life. Music is my soul. I wake up with music in my head and I am never without the sounds and rythms of some type of music. I have been described as an Eclectic Folk- Musician. I have played everything from Bach, Blues, Rock, Showtunes, Old-Time Fiddling and now to Middle Eastern.

It's great being here and I hope to make some friends!

My choice is:

Nigel Kennedy(he's not using e.violin much, but plays with fire)
Jerry Goodman(the flock, mahavishnu orchestra)
Linda Brava(simply because she's so gorgeous!)

a great example of an awesome violin solo!

The whole album is great, and her violinist is one of the best, if not the best in the new age/world music (recorded on major label)I heard so far...

His style is gentle, yet strong, very touching, melodic and memorable...

Hola, Y'all familiar with yamaha's so called silent violin? Fine looking (comes in colors), lightweight, and extremely playable.. Various settings simulate sound in a small chamber or a large hall, extremely tweakable thru FX boxes and such.
I dearly love mine.. Ralph

something NEW!!!!!

Hi all!
First of all, I would like to encourage everyone to upload the pics of their electric violins, etc....!

For instance - E. F.
is a well known professional e.violin maker.
His instruments look beautiful(hope they sound as good too ;-)...they probably are)

SO FEEL FREE TO ADVERTISE A QUALITY PRODUCT(e.violins)OR MUSIC!

However - I give it to you straight - if your product or your music "sucks" - I'll be straight, honest and respond with detailed criticism, which we could debate on this tribe.
Since you are putting yourself "out there"...you must be ready for anything.
Think of it as trying to compete for American Idol(for exaple(!), and by the way - I don't watch it, and think it's not fare, since only singers are allowed)...you are putting yourself in front of the public - so if you're good - they'll be happy to acknowledge that, but if you are bad - well that's the sad truth, and you better choose to use that criticism to improve yourself and correct your mistakes.
Besides, you always have a chance to defend yourself in the tread, and state your case.
Running away only proves that you are just a "wanna be"...and not even a good one at that.

I take it as a personal insult if any of you will erase ANY thread on this tribe without first notifying me of it!!!(even if you started it in the first place)
If you do it - I will have to banish you.

Learn how to respect others and wash your hands(and ears) before dinner.
:)

I treat everyone equally, as myself, until proven wrong.

I'm a serious musician, and don't care for "your" mind games!

On a good note - I think mature people can have a lot of interesting new things going on in this tribe.
Who knows, it might even change your life!(positively)

Hey, that's funny....
A guy posted a topic , trying to push his group....
he gave a link....there were samples in there....

So I replied with the review......

Frankly - his stuff was not very good...

I gave a very profound insight on the flaws and whatever good in there.

Apparently, I guess the guy couldn't handle a critique...
So he erased the thread...

Thus he only made himself look like a complete looser, and got what he deserved...

I guess - truth hurts.

And dude - if that's the case - I don't want to see your face on this tribe ever again!

Report from the e-violin front: Was using a recording of a drum and bass track as a sorta metranome backup today. A minor sounding hypnotic loop. Had a ridiculous amount of reverb echos set to the same time interval as the recording and was trying to weave them into stacked harmonies. I was just starting to figure out a few tricks and get a nice feel going when all the devices went dead along with power to the whole place.
It turned out a squirrel had crossed poles on the transformer outside, shorting out the whole place as well as frying his furry ass. Eventually the power co. came and put a small cage device around the poles to prevent repetition.. everywhere ya turn is another music critic eh?

Hello...I hope there are other e.v. players out there, or people who likes the music.
So let the fun begin...
